Sulfur cosmos has become an indispensable part of my growing color endeavor that is easy to grow, hardy, drought tolerant once established, and a beautiful ornamental addition to any garden (dye themed or not). Cosmos flowers come in a variety of colors, but the orange or ‘sulfur’ colored type packs a potent tinting punch. The flowers produce colors ranging from soft yellows to punchy tangerine and rich orange to olive green and warm brown with iron modification.
You can start these seeds indoors in late winter to early spring in average to well-fertilized soil, protecting them from potential frost until they’re established and can be transplanted outdoors in warmer weather. They can grow well in containers as well as in the ground and will appreciate well draining soil and a sunny spot. Once established and the plant starts blooming, it’s best to pick flowers often, or ‘dead head’ the waning flowers to keep the plant producing blooms for a longer period.
