Black Hollyhock Seeds- 'Alcea Rosea'
Black Hollyhock Seeds- 'Alcea Rosea'
Each seed packet contains approximately 80 seeds.
Black Hollyhock flower brings many possibilities of color including shades of purple, green, slate blue and pink from the dark purple petals. Black Hollyhock contains a dye component in the anthocyanin family of plant dyes allowing it a flexibility and playful nature as many other dyestuffs in this family like red cabbage, red rose, many edible berries, and red onion skins. Hollyhock flowers come in a variety of colors, but the dark purple colored type packs a potent tinting punch. The plant grows tall up to 6 feet tall and makes a beautiful ornamental in the garden. It can be grown in a large container and will appreciate some shade. The flowers are picked throughout the flowering season- and because this plant is a biennial- it may not blossom until the second summer- but the incredibly prolific dye giving flowers are worth the wait!
You can start these seeds indoors in late winter to early spring in average to well-fertilized soil, protecting them from potential frost until they’re established and can be transplanted outdoors in warmer weather. Once established and the plant starts blooming, it’s best to pick flowers often, or ‘dead head’ the waning flowers to keep the plant producing blooms for a longer period.
